National Hockey League
Development Committee
Despite the NHL's legacy as the world's premier professional ice hockey league, the league and the sport still face significant barriers to expanding their reach. To address this, NHL leadership established the Development Committee after the 2026 Stanley Cup, bringing together one player from each of its 32 franchises to develop new strategies for expanding the sport as a whole. But the interests of the league and its individual franchises are not always identical. While all 32 representatives stand to benefit from popularity, each also represents an organization competing for the same players, supporters, sponsors, playoff positions, and ultimately the Stanley Cup.
